Mayra Cardenas
LPC, CSAC | Mental/Substance Abuse/Therapist
Hello! My name is Mayra Cardenas and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC), and National Certified Counselor (NCC). I received my Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology and a minor in Biology from George Mason University and my Master’s of Arts in Clinical Mental Health from Argosy University. I began working as a relief counselor with the Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court in Arlington County then transitioned into Home-Based Counseling. In 2017 I started working with Youth for Tomorrow where I began working on obtaining my LPC and CSAC. Here, I strengthened my clinical skills and discovered my true passion in the field while working with adolescents, families, and adults. I pride myself in being part of the Latino community and value the opportunity to use my fluency in Spanish as it allows me to also extend support and services. In 2021 I decided to feed my curiosity in exploring the mental health field further and became a behavioral health therapist with Inova Kellar Center where I facilitated the Intensive Outpatient Program – Substance Related Disorders (IOP-SRD) track and then transitioned into a lead therapist in their Partial Hospitalization (PHP) program working with high-risk adolescents, some of whom also struggled with substance use. I returned to Youth for Tomorrow in December 2022 due to my desire to resume providing services in an outpatient setting and to a wider range of individuals. I utilize various approaches to include Motivational Interviewing, Strength-Based Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy techniques in working with various challenges such as anxiety, depression, school avoidance, and substance use.
Outside of being a therapist, I enjoy being outdoors (especially in the summer time relaxing by a beach!), exercising (definitely NOT a runner, though), and love my two cats, Caesarina and Levi. I come from a big family from both Bolivian and Salvadorian backgrounds. Do-It-Yourself home remodeling is definitely one of my favorite hobbies along with painting and pretty much any arts and crafts (coping skills are important for therapists, too!).
My goal is to provide care and support in the community by holding a safe, nonjudgmental, compassionate, and empathetic space for individuals of all walks of life to feel heard and have the opportunity to explore and discover that there is better…it just hasn’t been unlocked yet. Being vulnerable is a scary, but yet, beautiful thing and I’m a firm believer that we all deserve the best version of ourselves.
