Andrew Wilkerson ’22
This past weekend, the WFS mountain biking team raced Virginia Episcopal School at home in their first race of the season. The team had never raced VES prior to this year, so the riders for Woodberry had no idea what the opposing team was going to bring to the table. However, since this was a home race WFS entered the competition with an advantage knowing the course like the back of their hand.
The course stayed mostly the same as a regular season league race for either NICA (Fall league) or VAHS (Spring league), except for one new addition to the course designed by Coaches Nolan LaVoie and Jesse Woody. This new addition, which consists of a rock garden book ended by two wooden bridges, provided a challenge for all levels of riders participating in the race. Rider Cooper Fowler had this to say about the team’s race: “Overall the race was great! Everyone finished in both JV and Varsity categories finished in under an hour so a successful race.” Woodberry dominated in both the two lap and three lap race categories, securing the top three place in both, with Andrew Wilkerson ‘22 winning the three lap race and Nick Dudley ‘21 winning the two lap competition. This race came at relative short notice, but riders were prepared for the challenge. This race may be the only one of the season, although potentially a race might take place midweek on VES’ course in Lynchburg in the coming weeks. As the Tigers move to 1-0 on the season, the mountain bikers look forward to the chance of competition despite the lack of any scheduled matches as of now.
