Coach Holmes Sponsors Mock Draft Competition, Hosts Watch Party via Zoom

By Griffin Warlow ’23

Last week Head Varsity Baseball Coach and math teacher, Mr. Chris Holmes, started a contest for the community. Coach Holmes sent the extended Woodberry family an email challenging all who would accept to try to pick the players that teams would draft in the first round of this year’s NFL Draft. He offered a template of the mock draft to fill out and send back to him before the day of the draft.

Coach Holmes sent another email last Thursday, Draft Day, in preparation for the draft, reminding anyone interested to try to fill out a draft and revealed that he would be hosting a draft party for everyone via Zoom. The gathering on Zoom served as a socializing event for the boys and certainly included a little trash talk as those online compared brackets and watched the picks as they happened live. I was online with Coach Holmes and he said “It was really interesting to read all the different mock drafts that were sent in.”

It is unfortunate that we had to resort to a virtual draft party, rather than crowding the common rooms on dorm with our classmates and brothers but it was still possible to make the best of the situation. The picks have now been long decided and the draft has passed but there will hopefully be more teachers to draw inspiration from Coach Holmes and host similar events in the future.
