Climbing Team Competes in the WAICL Championships

Judson Faulconer ’21

The Woodberry Forest Climbing team traveled to Crystal City, Arlington, Virginia on  February 9 for the Washington Area Interscholastic Climbing League Championship. Climbers Hale Roberts ‘21, John Meeks ‘21, Judson Faulconer ‘21, Spence Whitman ‘21, Pen Oldham  ‘22, and Tanner Cummings ‘22 represented the Tiger’s six varsity climbers to compete in the tournament.

Climbers were tasked with getting their two best boulder problems and two best top rope problems within the two hour time limit. The enormous Earth Trek climbing gym was the largest that the team competed in all year, but the gym held up to its standards of having very difficult routes.

Even with the difficult climbing, the Tigers still performed well with an amazing performance from Roberts who scored 49 points, getting him 9th overall in the tournament. When asked how he was able to perform so well in  difficult conditions, he said,

“I think it’s better to start with top roping,” said Roberts, “and I just summoned the energy of (ex-teammates) Ashby Shores and Reese Tilenger.”

Faulconer and Meeks finished with scores of 33, Oldham a score of 32, Cummings a score of 30 and Whitman with a score of 30, leading the Tigers to an overall score of 178. Due to the stiff competition, the Woodberry Climbers finished seventh overall out of eight teams.
