“The Dual” between Woodberry and Episcopal started with a pin, Tiger on top of Maroon, and that set the tone for the rest of the night. The Tigers would go on to pin five of the eight Maroon wrestlers, en route to a 66-12 win over Episcopal this past Tuesday.
The two archrivals met in a rowdy Reily Wrestling Room with mat-side seating for the students. The match began at the 152 lb. weight class with Charlie Dalton ‘21 pinning his opponent in the first period. The next few matches followed suit with Sam Cochran ‘20 and Nic Ball ‘22 also pinning their opponents.
Woodberry then ran away with the overall team score as Emmett Aydin ‘20, Simon Taylor ‘21, Hutch Bray ‘21, Carter McCall ‘23, and Spencer Cammarata ‘23 all earned forfeits because of the Maroon’s inability to fill each weight class above 182 lbs. and below 120 lbs.
After the five forfeits from Episcopal, sixth former Rainey O’Malley took the mat to face Episcopal’s Chineme Agulanna. After a physical first two periods, O’Malley pinned Agulanna with 50 seconds remaining in the final period while the crowd erupted with cheers.
Cylus Garza ‘21 got the fifth and final pin for the Tigers, and the night ended with Sam Thomas ‘21 winning by forfeit. Beau Hardison ‘20, Gus Bell ‘20, and Winston Ransone ‘22 all wrestled hard in their matches but were unable to win.
Woodberry continues its recent dominance over Episcopal on the wrestling mat with another victory, this time a 66-12 beat down. The Tigers will wrestle again on January 25 at the Orange County High School Invitational.
