On Wednesday night, Jan. 15, 2020, the school hosted the inaugural One Love Dodgeball tournament. Chaplain Mr. Tyler Montgomery had worked very hard to brainstorm the event, write the rules, create the teams, tape the boundaries of each of the eight courts, and procure both the dodgeballs and the pizza. The expectation-exceeding, well-organized event got much of its credibility from a Woodberry staple: free Domino’s Pizza (and cookies from the Dining Hall Staff).
After a World Cup style, round-robin, 32-team tournament, it came down to Team 15 and Team 26 competing for the first-ever One Love Dodgeball Championship. It was Team 15 (Carter Harrell ’22, Nic Hawkins ’22, John Hill ’22, Adam Henegan ’20, Malik Holley ’22, Mac Holman ’20, Tripp Hood ’20, Milo Jacobs ’21, Daniel Janney ’21, Rodney Lora ’23, Max Marshall ’23, and Carter McCall ’23) that came out victorious.
“I put the team on my back. And we got that dub!” Holman said after clinching the championship.
JP Sporleder ’23 (Team 26) also said: “Although we lost in the final match, it was definitely lots of fun.”
