Climbing Competition against Episcopal

This past Saturday, the Woodberry Varsity climbing team handily defeated Episcopal 213-190.  Coming off a victory against the Maroon the previous week in top-roping, the Woodberry climbers were antsy to pummel EHS a second time. But this competition meant even more to the Tigers, for this one was on home turf.  A loss here to Episcopal would be insufferable.

After a twenty minute warm up, a celebrity appearance by former coach, Nolan Lavoie, and a healthy layer of eye-black the Tigers were feeling prepared.  At this point there was nothing to do besides wait. Both teams lined up and tensely shook hands; the Maroon were visibly intimidated by the Tiger’s eye-black.  A quick review of rules ensued and then the teams were loosed onto the walls. The Tigers started strong, but so did EHS. After about ten minutes into the comp, passerbys could sense the energy and soon the spectator deck was packed.  This electric atmosphere in turn propelled the athletes. Things seemed desperate when two EHS climbers finished an impressive v8, but instantly senior captain, Ashby Shores, responded, keeping the tigers in the mix. Finally, with eighteen seconds left, Hale Roberts was the second and last Tiger to get the v8, successfully securing the win for the Tigers.

Woodberry is looking forward to claiming first at the season-culminating Climbing Championship in Northern Virginia.
