As Christmas break comes to an end, Model United Nation team members are gearing up for their season to really heat up.
The team spent the first four weeks of the Winter trimester in training for four new delegates and five returning delegates. Agus Tornabene ‘19, the Head Delegate, conducted the training, which included everything from reasearch to public speaking. The meetings have also included lessons of sorts where delegates honed their skills and tried to deepen their understanding of foreign affairs.
In the next few weeks, delegates will be researching individually on their topics for two upcoming conferences: the Harvard Model United Nations Conference (HarvardMUN) and the Johns Hopkins University Model United Nations Conference (JHUMUNC). The whole team will participate in both conferences, which is a first for Woodberry Model UN. On January 24, the team will fly to Boston for HarvardMUN, joining over 3,300 other high schoolers in one of the most high-profile conferences in the Model UN circuit. After they get back on the 27th , delegates will dive right back into their preparations for JHUMUNC.
On February 7, the team will embark on its trip to Baltimore for JHUMUNC – a smaller, yet still prestigious conference. This will be the third year Woodberry will atend John Hopkin’s conference. Last year they got to represent the People’s Republic of China; this year brings yet another high-profile delegation for the Tigers as they prepare to represent Canada.
When asked about his hopes for the season, the Head Delegate said that he hopes that all team members win awards this year or at least have a significant impact on their committees. We look forward to hearing about how Woodberry Model UN does this season.
