Audric Gupton ’20 and Reed Shemwell ’21
After a devastating defeat last year against the Cougars, the Tigers shot back with a 97-89 victory to end the three year loosing streak against Collegiate. Improved times across the pool led to a close but satisfying finish this year, completed with a final 4×100 yard Freestyle relay win with familiar captain Charlie Moore ‘19 and recently elected Jack Stelter ‘20. Kyle Floyd ‘20 and newcomer Gavin Newcamp ’21 had enough juice to stay ahead and finish ahead of the talented Cougars for a finish leaving spectators as lost for breath as our swimmers.
Returning Tigers broadcasted a copious amount of growth and improvement. In this exact meet one year ago, Stelter swam his portion of the 4×100 Freestyle Relay in 52.49 seconds. His time this year improved just under two seconds at 50.66 seconds and returning light to the new and improved team. His classmate, Floyd also improved his time (50.62) to 49.02. The roommates’ efforts governed the final race and locked down the win for the boys. One of the most significant improvements was Blyth Brewster ’20 who swam a 33.2 in the 50 Yard Freestyle at last year’s meet. This year, however, she swam a 29.45, an improvement of almost four seconds. Others like Lucas Zhang ’20 also improved their 50 Yard Freestyle times. His went from 29.9 seconds to 27.92 seconds. Mike Keohane ’19 dropped his 200 Yard Freestyle from 2:09.41 minutes to 2:03.19. Will Fletcher ’21 improved his 500 Yard Freestyle time from 5:54.2 to 5:35.36. Another notable improvement was Liam Desmond’s ’20 500 yard Freestyle dropping from 6:06.6 to 5:48.45.
The significantly new but eager diving team hopped into progress with a confident and experienced Michael Garifullin ’19 placing first in the diving portion of the duel meet this past Tuesday with a score of 175.60. Alvaro Garcia Valdecasas ‘21 completed his first meet with second place. Garifullin was the only returning diver from last year and his experience will lead his 5 new teammates to a hopefully successful season.
The Tigers celebrate their victory and dive back into action this coming Tuesday at Fork Union.
