Varsity Soccer at VES

Walker Antonio ‘19

Last Tuesday, the Varsity Soccer team defeated the Virginia Episcopal Bishops 2-0 on their home field in Lynchburg, Virginia.

The first half ended at 0-0, but the determination and hard-work from the VI Form captain Max Weaver in the midfield was paying off. It was only a matter of time before the Tigers scored. After the ball bounced around for quite some time in the box, Hugh Monsted ‘20 managed to put away the opening goal ten minutes into the second half.

Later in the half, Walker Antonio ’19 and Richter were able to create multiple scoring opportunities in the air, but unable to capitalize. Nearing the end of the game, Alvaro Garcia-Valdecasas ’21 chipped the defenders to Antonio for a breakaway shot on goal. The goalie came out and took out Antonio’s legs, but not before the striker was able to slide it past him for the second goal of the game.

The Tigers now have a 2-0 record going into this Friday’s game against Cape Henry Collegiate, the reigning state champions. In the previous two meetings, Cape Henry Collegiate won 2-5 during the regular season, and again won 3-4 in overtime of the state tournament quarter-final. This coming game will help the Tigers identify where they stand in Virginia.
