Taft Gantt ’20
This past weekend, Woodberry invited back alumni from the Classes ended in ‘3 and ‘8. Classes ranged from the fifth year reunion Class of 2013 all the way back to the 75th year reunion Class of 1943. Woodberry hosted a total of 652 people including returning alumni and their guests.
Events started Friday evening when alumni gathered at class parties around campus. On Saturday, alumni were invited to visit classes, see a special presentation on Woodberry history, attend the instrumental ensemble concert, play in a golf tournament, mountain bike with the team around campus, compete in the alumni soccer match, and much, much more. That night all Classes came together for a dinner party in the big tent by the Barbee.
The weekend concluded on Sunday with a moving chapel service. This year, former Headmaster, Dr. Campbell gave the sermon. The service included the remembrance of every alumnus who has passed away in each reunion Class present by reading the names of the deceased.
Throughout the weekend, alumni reconnected with old classmates and teachers, shared memories with friends, and relieved their Woodberry experience.
The most noteworthy part of the weekend was the return of the Class of 1968 celebrating its 50th year reunion. 57 members of the class returned to Woodberry to celebrate. This was an outstanding number considering the fact that 11 members of the Class have passed away. The Valedictorian of the Class of 1968 was also present celebrating the special occasion. His name was Paul Huber. The 50th had a celebratory lunch in the Residence on Friday, followed by a student panel where the Class learned about what Woodberry is like today. However, the meeting turned into the ‘old guys’ telling the students what it was like in 1968. That evening, the Class of 1968 had a special dinner and celebration in the Baker Gallery.
It was a wonderful weekend for all returning alumni!
