On Tuesday October 17, 2017, the Woodberry Forest Tiger’s soccer team played a match against Fork Union Military Academy, or Fuma for short. The Tigers swept Fuma with a score of 8 to 0. Chuksi Emuwa had a hat trick: one assisted by Saeed Abokor; one assisted by Frido Wagner; and one unassisted goal. In addition to assisting Chuksi, Wagner had two goals today: one assisted by Jack Sloan, and one assisted by William Keller. Tadiwa Sithole had one unassisted goal, Hugh Monsted was assisted by Putnam Roberts for a goal, and Alex Forward ended the match with a goal assisted by Spoon Jacobs. Everyone was able to play this game. Sadly, Noel Turlington suffered an injury to the knee during the second half.
The first half of the game was played spectacularly by the Tigers. They started off rocky, giving Fuma an early look but pulled it together to hold possession most of the match and end the half with a 6-0 lead. In the second half, reserve players were subbed on and off, allowing everyone to play. Even with reserves, the Tigers controlled the match, holding possession for most of the time and scoring two more goals to call the game early at the 80th minute. The Tigers played well altogether.
Woodberry has a very challenging game coming up on Friday; they will be playing Trinity Episcopal, a good team with a very good offense. However, according to Head Coach Mr. Mills, “Collegiate and St. John Paul have strong attacking players and our defense held strong against them. Two strongest offense we’ve seen and our defense shut them down.” The match against Trinity allows Woodberry to continue the momentum they have built in the past three games, outscoring their opponents 15-3, and try and fight for a top 8 position going into the state tournament.
